Recession is a ma<\/span>tter of when, not\nif!<\/h2>\n\nLuci Ellis, former head of the central bank\u2019s Financial Stability Department, said in September 2015,<\/strong> “the nation\u2019s 24-year run without a recession looked sustainable, even accounting for a painful Chinese slowdown and lower commodity prices.\n \n\u201cOne (a recession) will happen in my lifetime, but I really don\u2019t want to put my money on exactly when,\u201d Dr Ellis said.<\/span>\n<\/span> \nShe was right, it wasn\u2019t predicted because Australia\u2019s next recession occurred in 2020, during the first and second quarters of the year. This was primarily due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some industries like Mining and Financial and Insurance Services still recorded growth during this period.<\/span> <\/span>Before that, Australia had experienced a long period of economic growth since the early 1990’s.\n
